Katniss

You haven’t seen my latest office sock yet, and it’s cruising along. The yarn is Lorna’s Laces Solemate, which is a 55/15/30 blend of superwash merino, nylon, and something called “Outlast,” which
is a NASA fiber that is supposed to regulate temperature. It promises to keep you warm when it’s cold, and cool when it’s hot. We will see! I purchased this at Sock Summit 2011 so it’s been marinating for a while:

The color is called “Grand Street Ink” and it’s grayish-purple. It is similar to the color that Amy Herzog used in Afterlight, which is very popular on Ravelry right now (and also in my queue).

ANYWAY, the sock I’m making is called Katniss, named after the main character in The Hunger Games trilogy (of course!). I think it’s appropriate to use a fiber called “Outlast” on a competitor such as Katniss. The pattern is free. It is mostly a ribbed sock, but with a single braid (just like Katniss) – and the heel is interesting. It is a standard, top-down heel flap, but the gusset decreases work differently. Can you tell?IMG_0851Instead of decreasing one stitch in from the edge of the flap, you decrease closer to the sole. And that little triangle is in rib stitch rather than plain stockinette.

It’s not at all difficult, just different.

This yarn is so smooth and round. It is a dream to knit with after struggling with that Jacob blend.

It’s almost time for the toe!

  1. That is a really interesting heel. And you're really tearing through this. I love that color, too.
